The brewery concept...

The Encounter Bay Brewing Company began as a concept in 2003. The initial stages involved a viability analysis for a microbrewery venture based on the South Coast region. The analysis was completed later that year and indicated that the region would support a brewery between 12 and 24 HL in size. A business plan was then drafted, followed by an investigation into leasing a suitable commercial site.

Location is crucial and after several unsuccessful months of looking for a suitable site the project looked like stalling. The release of the Expression of Interest by Alexandrina Council in the Goolwa Wharf Precinct in Autumn 2004, and subsequent negotiations, came at a very opportune time to keep things moving.

After obtaining ‘preferred Lessee’ status from the Council, development plans were drawn up and a lease negotiated.
Sourcing of brewing equipment required then commenced, along with the renovation of The Railway Goods Shed - the soon-to-be home of The Steam Exchange Brewery.

A little history....

Along with its paddlesteamer and railway heritage, Goolwa also has a brewing history.  In view of its past, the Goolwa Wharf Precinct is the ideal location for a microbrewery complex. The careful restoration of the Railway Goods Shed not only maintains the original historic charm and character but also combines

the local ‘vernacular’ style architecture of a working river-port with the bold contemporary elements of a gleaming microbrewery. This is a unique opportunity for visitors to sample high quality hand crafted beers available for tasting in an historic setting

The Vision...

Throughout Australia the growing trend towards consumption of fresh, preservative free products has become more apparent. Beer is no exception. Our vision is to revive the historic tradition of brewing ales and lagers as part of the regional cuisine.
